Automating Liquid–Liquid Extraction with SLE Cartridges

THE CHALLENGE OF CONVENTIONAL LLE

Liquid–Liquid Extraction (LLE) is a well-established sample preparation technique, but conventional workflows rely on several manual operations: solvent addition, mixing, phase separation, and recovery of the organic phase.

These steps can make extraction time-consuming, operator-dependent, and difficult to standardize, particularly when processing substantial sample sets.

A SMARTER APPROACH: SUPPORTED LIQUID EXTRACTION

Supported Liquid Extraction (SLE) maintains the same fundamental liquid–liquid partitioning principle while simplifying how extraction is performed.

Instead of directly mixing two liquid phases, the aqueous sample is loaded onto an inert porous support. After equilibration, the organic solvent passes through the support, extracting the target analytes while highly polar matrix components remain in the aqueous phase.

The result is a more controlled and streamlined extraction workflow.

SIMPLIFYING SAMPLE PREPARATION

SLE eliminates several of the operational challenges associated with conventional LLE:

NO SHAKING OR CENTRIFUGATION
Eliminates heavy mechanical sample preparation steps completely.
NO MANUAL PHASE SEPARATION
Removes risky physical separation and pipetting operations.
NO VISUAL INTERFACE IDENTIFICATION
Prevents human error and uncertainty in phase recovery.

THE EVOLUTION: SYNTHETIC SORBENTS

Modern SLE cartridges can use synthetic sorbents with controlled particle size distribution. Compared with naturally mined materials, these sorbents provide a more homogeneous extraction medium, supporting uniform solvent flow, improved reproducibility, and reduced batch-to-batch variability.

SLE UNLOCKS AUTOMATION

The simplified workflow makes SLE particularly well suited to automated sample preparation workstations. By removing shaking, centrifugation, and manual phase separation, SLE can be integrated into automated extraction workflows to help laboratories achieve:

Reduced sample preparation time
Fewer human errors
Improved productivity
Greater workflow standardization

For laboratories processing dozens of samples per day, this combination of simplified extraction and automation can deliver significant operational advantages.

THE TAKEAWAY

SLE brings the proven extraction principle of LLE into a simpler, more standardized workflow. With synthetic sorbents and automated sample preparation, laboratories can increase productivity, improve reproducibility, and simplify extraction while retaining the same fundamental chemistry.
